LAMP Dedicated Server

LAMP dedicated serves are based on a collection or group of free, open source software. The acronym LAMP, refers to the first letters of the Linux kernel (Linux is a very popular piece of free software created by Linus Torvalds and is supported by thousands of other programmers around the world), Apache, MySQL(database software) and originally PHP but can also include Perl and/or Python. These are the principal components to build a viable general purpose web server and is very often used with a popular web based control panel; cPanel.

The open source software in a LAMP server setup may differ depending on what is needed to run on a LAMP dedicated server, especially when it comes to the web scripting software, as PHP could easily be replaced or supplemented by Perl and/or Python. If you have anything specific in mind to run on your LAMP dedicated server please let us know and we can advise. Similar terms exist for essentially the same software suite (AMP) running on other operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows (WAMP), Mac OS (MAMP), Solaris (SAMP), or OpenBSD (OAMP).

Though the open source software was not initially designed to automatically work seamlessly together by the original authors of these programs, the development philosophy and tool sets are shared and were thus developed in close conjunction. This particular software combination; LAMP has become quite popular as a tried and true web server “package” because it is free of cost, open-source, and because of the ubiquity of its components which come bundled with many current Linux distributions.

When used together, they all form what is known as a “solution stack” of technologies and software that support application servers.
